Comprehensive Exams
Students will complete two qualifying exams of 8,000-10,000 words each. The first shall describe in detail the theoretical framework of the study and will include a literature review. The second will describe in detail the methodologies used in the research design. These exams will be completed by the end of the second year of study (term 6). The advisor, or a designate, will be the first reader, and a second reader will be appointed by the Graduate Program Coordinator. The advisor serving as the first reader also serves as the student’s dissertation advisor.
After successfully completing the Comprehensive Examinations, each student will work with a faculty advisor or advisors over the duration of the program but a specific dissertation advisor will be selected and a dissertation advisory committee (DAC ) recruited to support the student through the final stages of the program. The student and advisor will establish deliverable dates where the student completes aspects of their study program, according to the outcomes designed and agreed upon ahead of time. It may also include an elective course. Pathways through the degree program are flexible and will be adapted to the student’s research focus. MU799 will be completed by the end of second year.
